September 2003

Every year the summers seem to fly by faster. It seems like just yesterday we were having a great time at the Kiddy Picnic. I hope every one had a good summer and is ready for another great year at the Society.

The program in September is being presented by Jim Brunett II, of the NYS DOT and it promises to be very informative.

Thank you to Nesco Bus Maintenance for sponsoring this month's cocktail hour.

I look forward to seeing every one there.

Welcome back! We will be at the New Hyde Park Inn for out monthly meetings through the November meeting.

We are still in need for letters of support for Farmingdale University's quest in starting a diesel technician program. I know there are a lot of fleet shops, dealers and repair facilities out there that are in dire need of trained, qualified diesel technicians. We have a chance at getting what we will need to support the future growth of our industry if you only send in a support letter. Call me and I will send or fax you a sample letter that can be put on your letterhead. This sample letter is also available to download on the Society's web site if you have Internet access.

Although it is only September and the 2004 EXPO is over six months away, start thinking about if you want to have an exhibit table at this great event. I am taking reservations for tables and we are limited to only 46 tables. Don't wait for the last minute and be left out.

Bylaw change proposals are now being accepted in writing. The deadline for any proposal is the March 2004 meeting.

Excerpts from our Constitution and Bylaws:

Article IX Voting Powers

1. The full voting powers shall be vested in the Member grade of the Society. The Associate grade Member shall have (1) one vote at a regular meeting only, but shall have no vote at the May meeting or in the election of Officers of the Society. The Apprentice Fleet Supervisor shall have no vote at any meeting or in the election of Officers of the Society, as so defined by the Bylaws VI Elections, par. #6. (Amended 5/19/93)

Hope you had a great summer, but now its time to go to work. We need to get the word out to the industry that we are looking for new Members. Wherever you go and to whomever you talk with, discuss the Society and its benefits. I hope that at the September meeting we will be bringing in some new full Members and Associate Members.

Welcome back from what I hope was a safe, healthy and happy summer.

The program for our first meeting of the New Year will be presented by James A. Brunet II, Chief, Bus Safety Section of the New York State Department of Transportation. He will be discussing the Department and its philosophies, its bus and truck inspection program, changes in that program and other issues that are of great importance to fleet operations. As the DOT will not be holding their annual convention this year, it is extremely important that you attend so that you can have a clear picture of the rules and regulations necessary to run your fleet within DOT compliance.

I look forward to seeing you all on September 17.

Just a reminder that all applications for the 2003 Society of Fleet Supervisors Scholarship must be received no later than the November meeting. To be eligible, you must fulfill an attendance of six out of the eight meetings during the calendar year.

Prospective applicants for the Hank Hasiwar Scholarship have been interviewed and the Scholarship Committee has made their selection of two Automotive Technology students from Farmingdale University. The awards will be presented at the October meeting.

Our condolences and deepest sympathy go out to Member Frank Almona on the passing of his brother, Tom during July.
