February 2003

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT - WILLIAM MCVEIGH

We are off to a good start for the New Year.

Buoyed by the success of the Scholarship Awards Dinner, we now are anxiously awaiting the Expo 2003 in April. Expo Chairman Frank (Cheech) Almona is filling the room fast and I urge anyone who wants a table to call Frank now before the room sells out.

I want to wish Nick Markatos a speedy recovery from his recent surgery and I am sure he will be burning up the course at our Golf Outing.

John Dozis has an excellent program for February and I look forward to seeing everyone there.

ARRANGEMENTS - CHEECH ALMONA

Tables are going fast for the EXPO so if you want to be in it, please contact me as soon as possible. For those who have reserved a table but haven't paid for it yet, please get your payment in. We will be contacting vendors from outside the Society for tables and if your table is not paid for, it will be up for grabs.

Free EXPO admission tickets will be sent out to the Membership at the end of the month. I am asking you to please distribute them to co-workers and to anyone who you think would benefit from attending our EXPO. If you need additional tickets, you can call me or order tickets online at the Society's web site.

Our February through May meetings will be held at the New Hyde Park Inn. There are a couple of Members that are forgetting to sign in at the door when they pay for their dinner ticket. Just remember that the sign in sheets are the only proof that we have to account for your attendance to fulfill the attendance requirement for the Society of Fleet Supervisors, Inc. Scholarship.

BYLAWS - TIM HARTE

Any Bylaw change proposals must be submitted in writing by the March 2003 meeting. Time is running short so if you have a change to propose, submit it now.

Excerpts from our Constitution and Bylaws:

Bylaw IV SOCIETY OF FLEET SUPERVISORS SCHOLARSHIP FUND

These scholarships would be awarded to students who are related to any Member of the Society who is in good standing and who attends at least 80% (6) of our regular monthly meetings during the (12) twelve months prior to the cut off date of all applications, which is the November general Membership meeting. Members of the Society who have completed (20) twenty years as a Member in good standing and continue to be a Member in good standing, but has relocated to another area that prohibits his/her attending Membership meetings will still qualify for scholarship eligibility. The same will apply to Members voted Life or Honorary Membership. (Amended 5/21/97)

The Members are entitled to enroll (2) two applicants if the student is their child or grandchild, or (1) one applicant if the student is his/her self, spouse, niece or nephew. In order to give a fair chance to all eligible Members, only one scholarship per family can be awarded each year. (Amended 5/19/99)

Each individual is entitled to (1) one scholarship only and no more than (2) scholarships per family in less than (5) five consecutive years. (Amended 5/19/99)

The student must be a high school graduate and enrolled in a continuing education program. (Amended 5/17/95)

When the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of available awards the award will be given on a raffle basis at our Annual Scholarship Awards Dinner, and the check will be paid to the order of the school and mailed to the applicant. (Amended 5/17/00)

It will be incumbent upon the Member to provide the Executive Board and the Scholarship Committee with documentation showing the undisputed relationship of the applicant. The Chairperson of the Scholarship Committee must provide to the Executive Board a complete list of the applicants and proof of eligibility for each applicant. Any incomplete application will be rejected with no discussion. In a case where a Member applicant has previously received a scholarship(s), the Chairperson must provide to the Executive Board a list of dates and numbers of previously awarded scholarships. All this information must be provided to the Executive Board at the December Executive Board meeting and prior to the final decision. (Amended 5/19/99)
