November 2002

I wish to thank all who braved the elements to attend the October meeting. Unfortunately, I was away at a NYSDOT conference in Albany, but I understand Mike Cafiero did an excellent job running the meeting in my absence.

November is the last month to place journal ads. The journal gives our Members and supporters an opportunity to honor those Members who have contributed much to the Society. Bill Ross, the 2002 Society of Fleet Supervisors Member of the Year, exemplifies that type of Member. Since joining the Society of Fleet Supervisors in 1989 as an Associate Member, Bill has held many positions. Bill has served as Membership Chairman, Co-Chaired the annual golf outing as part of the special Activities committee, served on the Expo Committee, and since 1996 has served on the Executive Board as the Society's Treasurer. Members like Bill are rare and deserve our support and appreciation. Lets make this year's journal reflect Bill's commitment to the Society.

Carl Aronin passed away Tuesday October 23, 2002 after fighting a gallant battle with cancer. Carl gave his all to the Society and was a good friend to many. He was always there to lend a hand, give advice, first to volunteer when the call went out. For years Carl cheerfully manned the sign-in desk at the monthly meetings, keeping things straight while Cheech worked the floor. We will all miss him.

The program this month will be given by Environmental Emission Systems on the Rentar Fuel Catalyst.

I hope to see you all at the November meeting

We will be at the New Hyde Park Inn for the November meeting as well as the regular meetings through May 2003.

We took a survey on various dinner menu choices at the October meeting and it was interesting. We will take the results in consideration and see if we can afford the new dishes.

The 2003 EXPO exhibit tables are filling up. If you had a particular spot in mind, better get your reservations in now or it will be gone. Exhibit tables are on a first come, first served basis. Call me at (718) 821-4096 for more information.

We will be accepting any Bylaw change proposals up until the March 2003 meeting. Any proposal must be submitted in writing by any Member of Member grade only.

Vincent Cullen, National Fleet Account Manager of DuPont Automotive Finishes presented an informative program on vehicle painting and refinishing, OEM connection, environmental regulations, OEM vs. shop repair processes and DuPont refinishing process.

Member George Pastor was the winner of the $50.00 in the BIG DRAW.

Life Member Nuno Tardo won two tickets donated by DuPont for a NASCAR race during the 2003 NASCAR season in the northeast, which includes the DuPont Hospitality Suite and Pit tour.

It was good to be able to start to bring in some Members and also some Associates. We still have a waiting list for Associate Members to come in but we need the full Members inducted to meet our Member/Associate ratio first. Please talk up the Society with all the people you meet every day and see who may be interested and give them a membership application.

Inducted at the October meeting were:
· Andre Sakharny, Fleet Supervisor for Blessenger Leasing as a Member. Andre oversees the maintenance, repairs including auto body repairs and state, federal and DOT inspections for a 300 vehicle taxi and limousine fleet.
· Jerome Cope, III, Sales Representative for Empire Equipment Sales Co., Inc. as an Associate Member. Jerry is responsible for the marketing, sales and service of construction and municipal equipment in the five boroughs of New York City.

Our program and cocktail hour for November is sponsored by Environmental Emission Solutions of Springfield Gardens, NY. Their presentation will be on the Rentar Fuel Catalyst, a product that causes diesel fuel to burn more efficiently, reducing polluting emissions as well as a company's diesel cost. This product will enable diesel engines to reduce "black smoke" and other toxins being emitted into the atmosphere while saving money and reducing fuel consumption. This should be a very informative presentation and a possible solution for many of us.

We were very pleased to award two $1,000.00 Hank Hasiwar Scholarship at the October meeting to two students from SUNY Farmingdale - Jimmy Chen and Dennis Murphy. Jimmy is a Flushing, NY resident and is currently a technician at Five Towns Nissan/KIA. He holds many Automotive Service Excellence certifications in the automotive and heavy truck fields. His future plans are to open his own repair shop one day. Dennis is a resident of Huntington, NY and also has plans to open his own repair shop in the future. Good luck to both of these fine students and may they someday join our ranks in the Society. Our thanks go out to Member Robert Lagnese for all he has done on the Scholarship Committee in presenting us with high quality students for our Hank Hasiwar Scholarship.

This is the last call for the Society of Fleet Supervisors, Inc. Scholarship! The November meeting is the deadline to submit your application and is the final meeting to complete your attendance requirement to be eligible for one of up to six $1,000.00 scholarships we have to award this year. Remember to keep Saturday, December 7th open on your calendar to attend the Scholarship Awards Dinner at Leonard's of Great Neck.
