April 2002

Although our program for March had to be canceled due to the presenter being involved in an auto accident, some of our Members came through. Jack Lawson of New York City D.O.T. gave some updates on events at Ground Zero since Sept. 11, (Jack and his department have been heavily involved with the massive clean-up operation). He also gave us some info on computer systems, and the importance of security in areas where our equipment is stored. Sheldon Wertman of John Iacono Inc., did an excellent job of updating us on the different types of air compressors available, and the possibility of receiving energy refunds from New York State for newly installed equipment.

The April meeting will be the time that the nominating committee will make their proposal for the 2002/2003 Officers for the Society, but you, the Fleet Supervisor can nominate a slate of your choice.

Our annual Kiddy Picnic is set for Sunday, May 19th at Eisenhower Park, East Meadow, NY. Please let Pat De Martino know how many of you will be attending. Pat did an excellent job with the activities last year, and this year will be as good or even better. I want to thank all of our donators for their pledges for this event.

The EXPO is almost upon us (April 24,2002 at the New Hyde Park Inn) and we need everyone's help in obtaining sponsors, exhibitors, and promoting the event. Please contact Cheech for any exhibitor requirements. Free passes have been sent out to everyone, we have a marketing person who sent out flyers and is making follow-up phone calls. Hopefully we will see a lot of new faces at this year's EXPO.

I hope everyone enjoyed his or her Easter or Passover holiday.

See you on April 17, 2002, and please promote our EXPO.

The Society's 2002 EXPO will be held at the New Hyde Park Inn, New Hyde Park on Wednesday, April 24, 2002. This is the Wednesday following the April meeting. We are dedicating the entire night to the EXPO so don't miss out on this event. There will be free food served during the entire event and a cash bar available just like in the past years. Please remember to distribute the free admission tickets I sent to you to your co-workers, customers, vendors or anyone who you think would benefit from attending our EXPO. We also had an outside promoter distribute over 1,500 free admission tickets to the industry. By the time you read this, we expect to be sold out on vendor exhibit booths. Please give me a call if you would like to exhibit and we will see if we are able to squeeze you in. Thanks in advance for your help.

We are back at the New Hyde Park Inn for the May meeting, which will be a regular meeting this year on Wednesday, May 22, 2002.

The deadline has passed for submitting any Bylaw change proposal. We received one Bylaw change proposal and it shall be read at the April meeting. A ballot will be sent out to all eligible voting Members in May and this Bylaw change proposal shall be voted upon at the May meeting.

Due to a traffic accident involving our speaker, Greg Fisher, during his trip to attend our meeting, our scheduled program was canceled. We rescheduled GM and their Power Train presentation for the April meeting.

Members Jack Lawson and Sheldon Wertman gave presentations. Jack, spoke on the aftermath of the World Trade Center tragedy and brought us up to date on what was happening at ground zero. He also provided information regarding ways to safe guard and improve the security for large fleets, following the WTC event.

Sheldon Wertman of John Iaconno, Inc. informed us about government rebates that have now been made available when purchasing new high efficiency air compressors.

Associate Member Bill Misita of Jellinek Auto Radiator was presented with a plaque in recognition of his outstanding achievement in attendance of 75 consecutive meetings.

$2,200.00 in donations was pledged for the Kiddy Picnic from many of the Associate and Members of the Society. If you haven't sent in your pledge, Treasurer Bill Ross will send you an invoice.

Gus Valos of Gabrielli Truck Sales, Ltd was the winner of $50.00 in the BIG DRAW. He donated his proceeds to the Kiddy Picnic.

Our Journal honoring Bill Ross is moving right along. It would be great to get at least one ad per Member this year. We already have one ad per Associate Member and our Associate Members have backed our Annual Journal 100 % each year. We can really use some help from our regular Members by them going out and getting their vendors to place an ad. Lets make this journal one to remember. You may contact any Executive Board Member or myself for any information. Applications are available on our web site also.

There were no new Members inducted at the March meeting. Hopefully we can get the word out and bring in some new Members. If anyone needs applications please see any of the Executive Board Members or myself.

We will have a table at the April Expo, so stop by and lets talk about how you can get involved in your Society and keep it going.

Members on the Move:

  • Member Richard Fosbeck is now with Butler Fleet Services of New York, NY as the Branch Manager. Dick oversees 10 shops that services 700 vehicles for Verizon.

Before you know it, this year will zoom by us. Please submit your Society of Fleet Supervisors Scholarship application in as soon as possible. Don't miss out on a possible chance at a $1000 scholarship because your application was incomplete.

Our annual Kiddy Picnic will be held on Sunday, May 19th at Eisenhower Park (Cherry Picnic area, Parking Lot 5) from 10: AM to 5:00 PM. The picnic will start with a light breakfast and then a full barbecue. There will be games, activities, prizes and toys for all children.

Members and their families will be free and guests will be $20. Please submit your reservations as soon as possible in order that we commit to the caterer and order toys for each child.

Reservation forms will be available with our Newsletter, on the web site and distributed at our next meeting. All reservations must be made prior to the picnic, no walk in's on the day of the picnic will be accepted. No reservations will be accepted after April 20.
