Frank Carpenter

How many Members of our organization can claim to be a third generation technician whose third son is carrying on the family tradition? One of our Members can!

This Member was born in October of 1941 in Jamaica , Queens and resided there until the age of 10. In 1951 this Member and his family moved to Lindenhurst, Long Island where he graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1959. Shortly after graduation, he married his lovely wife and embarked on his life long career of vehicle maintenance.

In 1960 this Member went to work as a mechanic/technician in a transit mix operation. In order to earn additional money, he occasionally hauled loads of sand into New York City , block plants at night and returned to Long Island carrying lightweight aggregates. This continued for thirteen years and in 1973 he changed fields from construction to trucking. That same year he joined the Southern Container Corporation in Deer Park .

In his first year he worked as a mechanic/technician on the floor. The following year he was promoted to a working foreman and in 1975 he was promoted yet again to Fleet Supervisor for the New York and Pennsylvania operations of Southern Container. As the fleet grew, so did his responsibilities. The company added fleets in South Carolina , New Jersey and Syracuse . When our Member of the Year for 2006 left Southern Container 12 years later (1987), he was responsible for approximately 450 pieces of equipment.

It was in February of 1987 that this Member joined Hub Truck Rental as a Maintenance Supervisor. The transition from private to rental fleet was more involved than Frank had anticipated, but with his usual determination and tenacity he affected a fine adjustment. His growth within Hub continued and about a year later he was named Director of Maintenance for Hub Truck Rental.

This Member who is held in high esteem by the Society also worked for Butler Fleet Services as a Branch Manager and maintained the Bell Atlantic fleet account in Suffolk County . That is when I met him, as my friend first; my boss second, some 10 years ago.

The Society of Fleet Supervisor's Member of the Year for 2006, Frank Carpenter, has been the Director of Maintenance for We Transport/Towne Bus located in Plainview , NY for the past seven years, overseeing all aspects of maintenance, both vehicle and building as well as vendor selection. His fleet consists of over 1,300 vehicles and has a staff of 8 Managers, 3 Parts Persons, an Administrative Assistant, 62 technicians serving 8 locations throughout Long Island and Queens .

During all this hard work and long hours, Frank and wife, Josie, have managed to raise a family of five, Frank, Cathy, Bill, Joe and Jim. Frank and Josie have eight grandchildren who are the loves of their life. The Carpenters currently reside in Smithtown , NY .

When not working (rarely), Frank enjoys spending time with his family, traveling with his bride, motorcycling, gardening, and baking. He makes a cheese cake to die for!

Frank was a Member of the Society in the past and once again rejoined our ranks in 2001. Besides being the Society's Treasurer, now in his third term, Frank is an active Member that has always placed the Society high on his priority list. He has always made himself available to assist in any way he is needed and is always willing to lend a helping hand.

I am honored to introduce and congratulate Frank Carpenter as the Society of Fleet Supervisors Member of the Year for 2006!
