2005
William McVeigh
Our Member of the Year for 2005, William McVeigh, was born in December 1956 in St Vincent's Hospital in New York City. Shortly after, his family moved from Bronxville, New York to Teaneck, New Jersey, where he grew up with his 11 brothers and sisters. He graduated from St Cecilia's High School in Englewood and attended Bergen Community College.
In 1980 Bill began working for Transit Mix Concrete at their Bronx facility, under the tutelage of Mr. James Langton. He prospered at Transit Mix and quickly rose through the ranks.
In 1982 Bill was promoted to Plant Manager and was placed in charge of the company's facility at West 26 St. and 12th Ave. His facility was responsible for supplying concrete to build the Javits Center, as well as many high-rise buildings and road construction projects.
Bill left the west side facility in 1984 and moved to the Transit Mix main repair facility in Long Island City where he again teamed up with Jim Langton and was promoted into Jim's position when Jim retired a year later.
It was during this time that Bill met Hank Hasiwar and his long time close friend, Mike Cafiero. Hank and Mike introduced him to the Society of Fleet Supervisors. He joined the Society in 1983 where he went on to serve as our Newsletter Editor, 2nd vice President, 1st Vice President and President.
In 1993 Bill joined Atlantic Express Transportation, the fourth largest school transportation company in the country and holds the position as National Director of Maintenance overseeing the vehicle maintenance of more than 7000 vehicles in 14 states.
It was at Atlantic Express that Bill met his lovely wife Debbie. He and Debbie now live in Middletown, New Jersey with their 5 children, Katie, Courtney, Sofia, William and Robert.
In his spare time Bill enjoys sailing, fishing, golf, and working around the house.
