May 2014

This month’s Member of the Month, we feature Michael “DJ MIKE” Calise, the former Safety and Training Coordinator for the NYPD’s Fleet Services Division.

Mike was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1952 and raised in Ozone Park NY.  He graduated from John Adams High School in 1970 and went on to Manhattan Vocational to study Tool and Die and Machine Shop.

Mike has been with the NYPD since 1981 and has been responsible for the safety and training of approximately 450 members of the Fleet Services Division.  His typical duties included EEO training and enforcement, Tow Truck safety and proper safe towing procedures, OSHA right to know classes, National Safety Council’s  defensive driving class, and New Employee Orientation.

He has worked as a car and truck mechanic, parts buyer, service writer and Safety Director before landing his current position, the Supervisor of NYPD Shop Six in Brooklyn.  Mike says he loves what he does and enjoys keeping busy.  His motto is “You just can’t make this stuff up!”

Prior to working for the NYPD, Mike was employed as a technician for several dealerships.  Through a mutual friend named Kenny, he landed a job as a truck mechanic at Fink Bakery, where he worked for longtime Society members Mike Iannizzi and John Dozis.  He worked at Fink bakeries for a number of years, a job he “hated to leave.”

Mike is a licensed NYS instructor, NYS Inspector, NYS body damage estimator, certified 10 and 30 hour OSHA instructor, Motorcycle Safety Instructor, American Heart Association CPR, AED, First Aid Instructor, as well as a disc jockey and emcee.  His company New York City Sounds has just celebrated its 35th anniversary.  Mike has also done commercials, public service announcements some acting in Off-Broadway plays, Stage Management, and has been in music videos.  Mike has also been the Emcee for several of our Expo’s.

Married for 1.5 years, Mike’s a proud grandfather of a (1) year old and a (7) seven year old.  In his “spare”   time, Mike enjoys going to swap meets, garage sales, cruises with the family and friends, and DJ’ing at parties with his wife Anngeannette.  An avid motorcyclist, he also owns and shows a restored 1976 yellow Corvette.

Mike is currently looking forward to retirement from the NYPD and also looking to a job in Workplace Safety, Boating Safety and the Driving instructor field as well as the Entertainment field.

He has been a member of the Society since 2005 and looks forward to meetings and the subjects covered.  During the course of his membership he did an outstanding job as Chairperson of the Legislative Committee.  He will be looking forward to the challenge of bringing more members in 2014.
