William McVeigh

William McVeigh, our Member of the Month was born in 1956 in New York City and raised in Teaneck, New Jersey where he grew up with his 11 brothers and sisters. Bill attended St. Celecila’s High School in Englewood, N.J. and graduated in 1975. He also attended Bergen Community College.

Bill began working for Transit Mix Concrete at their Bronx facility under the tutelage of James Langton and quickly rose through the ranks to Plant Manager of the West 26th Street, New York facility in 1982. His responsibilities included supplying concrete for The Javits Center and other high-rise buildings and road construction projects throughout New York City. Bill was transferred from that facility two years later to the Transit Mix main repair facility in Long Island City where he was promoted to Jim’s position when he retired a year later.

It was during that time that Bill met Hank Hasiwar and Hank’s long time close friend, Mike Cafiero, who introduced Bill to the Society of Fleet Supervisors. Bill joined our Society in 1983 where he would serve in numerous positions as Newsletter Editor, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President (twice) and will be our next President for an unprecedented third term as announced at our May 2012 General Meeting. 

Bill left the employ of Transit Mix Concrete to work for Ferrara Brothers at their Brooklyn, New York facility as Plant Manager. In 1988, Bill left Ferrara Brothers to take the position of Director of Maintenance for Cory Delivery Service with locations in New Jersey and Florida. Bill left Cory Delivery Service to try his hand at truck sales working for Bruno Truck Sales located in Brooklyn, New York.

In 1993, Billed joined Atlantic Express Inc. filling the position of National Director of Maintenance; overseeing the maintenance of more than 7,000 vehicles in 14 states.

Bill now holds the position of Maintenance Director for Total Transportation Corp. where his responsibilities include the maintenance of 1,000 School and Para Transit vehicles, oversee of 60 mechanics, purchasing, modifying, facility maintenance, modifications, and parts purchasing.

It was at Atlantic Express that Bill met his lovely wife, Debbie. The McVeigh’s currently reside in Middletown, New Jersey and have five children, Katie, Courtney, Sofia, William and Robert.

In his spare time, Bill enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren, Lucus and Jackson, playing golf, boating and bicycling.

In the almost 30 years as a Member of the Society of Fleet Supervisors, William “Bill” McVeigh has been an exemplary Member who has always placed the well-being of the Society above most else. His knowledge, sincerity, thoughtfulness and loyalty are unsurpassed adding to the success of our Society.
