Peter Kamen

Our Member of the Month is Associate Member Peter Kamen, Outside Salesman, for Bus Parts Warehouse in Manlius, NY. Peter services the NY Metro territory including the five boroughs and all of Long Island. As a leading national distributor, Bus Parts Warehouse focuses on replacement parts, product upgrades and special needs products for the school transportation industry. They stock a wide variety of products manufactured by the major suppliers in our industry from Specialty Manufacturing Co., Transpec Worldwide Safety Products, Walker Manufacturing exhaust systems, Mirror Lite and Rosco mirrors, Weldon lamps to Sure-Lok and Q’Straint wheelchair securement systems to name a few. They are also on the leading edge with new innovative products such as CRS LED strobe lights and other product upgrades. Along with car seats, they have a strong focus in the special needs product area and their staff members are certified as instructors on the proper securement of wheelchair bound occupants. Their in-house manufacturing capabilities include custom pre-spaced vinyl lettering and a large assortment of decals as well as standard and custom-made school bus seat covers. Bus Parts Warehouse operates out of a clean, well-organized 19,000 square foot facility and ship orders received by 2:00 p.m. the same day. On average, they ship to over 100 customers each day. Their customer service representatives cover the United States through phone contact and sales representatives personally visit many accounts throughout the United States.

Bus Parts Warehouse maintains a high industry profile by attending and exhibiting in selected local, state and regional conferences as well as the National Special Needs Conference, the STN Western States Conference and the National Association for Pupil Transportation (NAPT) Conference. Their advertising efforts include the use of a bi-monthly direct mailer to over 10,000 school transportation personnel, trade show attendance, membership in various pupil transportation associations, and advertising in national trade publications. They are the only parts distributor who belongs to The School Transportation Supplier Council of the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services. Prior to Bus Parts Warehouse, Peter was formerly employed by Fuchs Lubricants East Haven, CT for 30 years. His responsibilities included outside sales, development of industrial lubricants and related products. He serviced the metal forming industry with custom blending, educational seminars and publications. While employed by Fuchs Lubricants, Peter was awarded the “Supplier of the Year” award by International Tool Works (ITW) Industries.

Peter was a former member of the Connecticut chapter of Precision Metal Forming Association, New Jersey Chapter 13 of the Society of Die Cast Engineers.

Peter was born in Newark, N.J. in 1941. He was raised for his first 12 years in New Jersey then the family relocated to Connecticut in 1953. He graduated from Darien High School in 1959 and studied electronic operation technology with De Vry Institute of Technology.

Peter was formerly married to Rita Salato of Brooklyn NY in 1967 and was married for 36 years when Rita died in early 2003. They had three children, Jeff Kamen 44, Westbrook, CT, Allen Kamen 42, Milford, CT and Jason Kamen 37, Milford, CT. Peter has one granddaughter, Lily, daughter of Jason and Melissa Kamen. Peter is presently married to Susan Gordon, a widow, living on Long Island whom Peter met via a mutual friend. They were married in late 2004 to the present. Susan has one daughter, Kim Krestin living in Manhattan with her husband David. The Kamens presently reside in Dix Hills, NY.

His hobbies and interests include music, choral singing, currently with the Long Island Choral Society, plays several instruments including Guitar (classical, blues, folk, and country), Renaissance Lute, and Bluegrass banjo. Peter also enjoys time with his bride and fishing. He used to enjoy flying but is no longer active. 

His community service involves membership in the Nassau and Suffolk chapters of New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT), former radio operator for MARS (Military Affiliate Radio Service) for United States Air Force, Voluntary examiner for FCC Amateur Radio licensing and amateur radio operator W1ZBI. 

Peter has been an active Associate Member of the Society since January 2011.
