May 2006

This month's Member of the Month we feature Michael "DJ Mike" Calise, Safety and Training Coordinator for the NYPD's Fleet Services Division. Mike was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1952 and raised in Ozone Park NY. He graduated John Adams High School in 1970 and went on to Manhattan vocational to study tool and die and machine shop.

Mike has been with the NYPD since 1981 and is responsible for the safety and training of approximately 450 members of Fleet Services Division. These members are scattered throughout the five boroughs in (13) thirteen locations. His typical duties include instructing EEO training and enforcement, OSHA right to know classes, National Safety Council's defensive driving, hybrid vehicle safety, new employee orientation, as well as setting up training and attending training in various police related subjects. He has worked as a car and truck mechanic, parts buyer, service writer and safety officer before landing his current position. He is currently coordinating on-line training for his mechanics and helpers. His unit is a one-man operation downsized from (3) three so he keeps very busy. Mike says he loves what he does and enjoys keeping busy. His motto is "you just can't make this stuff up".

Prior to working for the NYPD, mike was employed as a technician for several dealerships. Through a mutual friend named Kenny he landed a job as a truck mechanic at Fink Bakery where he worked for Mike Iannizzi and John Dozis for a number of years. A job he "hated to leave!"

Mike is a licensed NYS instructor, NYS inspector, NYS body damage estimator, certified 10 and 30 hour OSHA instructor, as well as a disc jockey and emcee. His company New York City Sounds has just celebrated its 25th anniversary. Mike has also done commercials, public service announcements and been in music videos. Mike will also emcee our EXPO in April as he did last year.

Married for (21) twenty-one years, and grandfather of a (3) three year old in his "spare" time Mike enjoys going to swap meets, garage sales, computer shows, cruises with family and friends, and DJ at parties. He also owns and shows a restored 1976 yellow Corvette.

Mike is currently looking at retirement from the NYPD and looking for a job in the safety and training or driving instruction field. He has been a Member of the Society for over a year now and looks forward to meetings and the subjects covered. He says "and the food has gotten better!" He will be looking to bring in more members in 2006. "You just can't make this stuff up".
