This month we feature a Fleet Supervisor, Michael Scano, Manager of Vehicle Fleet Operations for the MTA Long Island Rail Road. He is responsible for 600 vehicles and manages the daily fleet operations, vendor repairs, capital replacement budget, engineering specifications and oversees the repair of vehicles by outside vendors. His fleet ranges from passenger cars, SUV's, light duty utility trucks, medium duty utility trucks and utility trucks. He is also responsible for the repair and maintenance of rail gear which allows the vehicle to travel on the rail to job locations along the rail road tracks. Mike has been with the Long Island Rail Road for one year. Prior to Long Island Rail Road, Mike was employed by Long Island Lighting Company/KeySpan Energy as a Senior Engineer for 15 years. There he was responsible for 1,200 vehicles located in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

Mike was born and raised in Plainview, NY in 1962. He graduated from Plainview Old Bethpage High School in 1980. Mike earned his Associate in Applied Science from the State University of New York, Farmingdale in 1983. He then earned his Bachelor of Technology degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, NY in 1988.

Mike is married to wife Mauretta since 1989 and has two children, Amanda, age 11 and Johnny, age 7. After a 15 years living in Lynbrook, NY, the Scanos recently moved to West Islip, NY.

Car collecting highlights Mike's hobby interests. He has a 1963 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport with its original 409 engine and is restored to its original condition. He enjoys going to car shows and talking about old muscle cars. Other hobbies include house renovation and remodeling. He loves to play a round of golf when time allows and is also NY Yankees fan attending many home games at Yankee Stadium.

Since joining the Society in October of 1996, Mike has been an active Member and assists on the Special Activities Committee on the Kiddy Picnic, Golf Outing and Annual Scholarships Awards Dinner.
