May 2004

This month we feature an Associate Member, Marty Vavrinec, as our Member of the Month. He is the President and Owner of Oceanside Transmissions and Wantagh Transmissions. He oversees all operations of the two transmission repair shops that employ 17 technicians. These shops specialize in fleet transmission repairs for school buses, vans, taxis, limousines and airport vehicles in addition to passenger vehicles. They also repair marine transmissions.

Marty brings to the Society a vast amount of knowledge and experience. He was a Service Manager for a Chevrolet and Oldsmobile dealer overseeing the mechanical repair shop and auto body shop from 1981 to 1990. From there, Marty moved on to the position as Service Director for a Lincoln-Mercury dealership from 1990 to 1994. He then decided to apply his experience and customer service background by purchasing Oceanside Transmissions in 1994. He did well enough that he was able to purchase a second shop, Wantagh Transmissions, in 2003.

Born in 1960 in Manhasset, NY, he graduated from Manhasset High School in 1978. He earned his Associates Degree in Automotive Technology at the State University of New York, Farmingdale in 1980. He is a former student of Society Member Robert Lagnese.

Marty and his wife, Lori, currently reside in Massapequa Park, NY. They have two sons, Gregory, 9 and Tyler, 3.

During his off hours, Marty enjoys boating, Golf, building hot rods and bowling in league play. He bowled a perfect 300 game in league play in 2004.

Marty has been an active Member of the Society since 2001 and has been a big sponsor of many of our events including the Kiddy Picnic, Golf Outing and EXPO.
