September 2002

Our September 2002 Member of the Month is Thomas Mitrakos, the shop manager for Atlantic Express Transportation at their Ridgewood, New York Facility. Tom is responsible for the repair and maintenance of 350 school vehicles. He oversees DOT inspections and repairs and supervises 15 mechanics.

Tom graduated from Jamaica High School in 1976 and furthered his education at Queensboro Community College where he studied computer technology. Tom has certifications from the: state of Connecticut; Instructional Techniques for Hazardous Materials, Hazardous Materials Awareness Level train the Trainer, Hazardous Materials Operation Level train the Trainer, and Hazardous Materials Technician Level train the Trainer.

In 1979 Tom moved to Texas under a special Exxon dealer program and operated a full service gas station with sales of motor fuels, oils, greases, batteries and tires. After spending two years in Texas learning the oil business, Tom returned to New York and accepted a position with Baerenklau Oil assisting in the supervision of fleet operations. In the spring of 1988, Tom was offered the position of Fleet Supervisor and Safety Manager at Whaleco Fuel. Tom joined Westbury Transport in 1995 as the Fleet & Safety Manager. Tom joined Atlantic Express in May of 2002.

In addition Tom is a volunteer fire fighter with the Bellerose Terrace Fire Department and is a member of the New Hyde Park Elks Club. Tom currently resides in Queens Village, NY with his wife Nikki. He has 2 children, Tommy John, 15 and Nicole, 12.

Tom has been an active Member of the Society since 1988. He has served as a past member on the Journal Committee for three years.
