On December 7th of this past year, Steven DeMizio, Director of Maintenance of Pioneer Transportation experienced his own personal horror like that of Pearl Harbor over fifty years ago. Working one night at his facility while spray painting, unaware he was inhaling deadly fumes, Steven began his trip home where unfortunately his exhaustion lead him to veer off the road into a New York City Transit Bus. This horrific accident left Steven with life threatening injuries, and only through his personal perseverance, determination and courage did he begin his slow battle back to health. After several operations to repair his leg, arm and face Steven returned to work in a wheelchair where for several months he directed the activities at Pioneer while experiencing excruciating pain. This is a man that certainly personifies the very best in American Courage and Determination. We are all proud to have Steven as a Member of our Society.

Steven is a native of Staten Island, born and raised in the Westerleigh section where in 1978 he began his career at the Pioneer Transportation Bus Corporation as a Shop Mechanic. He quickly was elevated within a short period of time to a First Class Master Mechanic. Over the next ten years after leaving Pioneer, Steven ran a Comprehensive Service and Maintenance Division for S&E Building Supply, which had a mixed fleet of vehicles consisting of Mack Forklifts, Tractor Trailer Units and Service Vans. Steven then returned to Pioneer Transportation as their Director of Maintenance overseeing 350 school bus units, 8 full time mechanics with an operating budget of over a half million dollars annually. Steven is also responsible for all DOT Regulations, Board of Education Regulatory Compliances as well as all Safety Guidelines. Steven also possesses DMV Certification in Light Automotive as well as Heavy Duty Trucks.

He also enjoys a tremendous passion for the restoration of antique cars coupled with the love of motorcycling in addition to rebuilding engines and accessories alike.

Steven and his lovely wife Joanne currently reside in Oakwood, Staten Island with their two future scholars, Steven Jr. and Daniel, all three who are very proud of their Dad and husband who exemplifies the very best of what the American spirit of courage is all about.
