How many Members of our organization can claim to be a third generation mechanic whose third son is carrying on the family tradition? The gentleman to whom we are referring is Frank Carpenter.

Frank was born in October of 1941 in Jamaica, Queens and spent the first ten years of his life there. In 1951 the Carpenter Family moved to Lindenhurst, Long Island and Frank graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1959. Shortly after graduation, he married his lovely wife, Josie and embarked on his life long career of vehicle maintenance.

In 1960 Frank went to work as a mechanic in a transit mix operation. In order to earn additional money, he occasionally hauled loads of sand into New York City block plants at night and returned to Long Island with light weight aggregates. This continued for thirteen years and in 1973 he finally made a change in fields; from construction to trucking. This was the year when Frank joined the Southern Container Corporation in Deer Park.

In his first year he worked as a mechanic on the floor. The following year he became a working foreman and in 1975 he became the Fleet Supervisor for the New York and Pennsylvania operations. As the fleet grew, so did Frank's responsibilities. The company added fleets in South Carolina, New Jersey and Syracuse. When Frank left Southern Container in 1987, he was responsible for 450 pieces of equipment.

It was February, 1987 that Frank joined Hub Truck Rental as a Maintenance Supervisor. The transition from private to rental fleet was more involved than he had anticipated, but with his usual determination he affected a fine adjustment. His growth still continued and about a year later he was named Director of Maintenance for Hub Truck Rental.

Frank also worked at Butler Fleet Services and maintained the Bell Atlantic account.

Currently, Frank has been the Director of Maintenance for We Transport/Towne Bus out of Plainview, NY the past three years. He oversees all aspects of maintenance, both vehicle and building along with vendor selection. His fleet consists of over 1100 vehicles and has 43 mechanics.

During all this hard work and long hours, Frank and Josie managed to raise a family of five children. The eldest is son, Frank, then comes daughter Cathy and sons Bill, Joe and Jim. Frank and Josie currently reside in Smithtown, NY.

Frank was a Member of the Society in the past and joined our ranks once again. He makes an effort to attend the monthly meetings regularly and has found the programs helpful and enlightening.
