Our Member of the Month, George Ferraro was born in Brooklyn, New York in November 1946. In 1964 he went to work for Clarklift of New York in the Service Department. In 1966, George entered the United States Army and served in the Republic of Vietnam with the Military Transport Group. He was Honorably Discharged in 1968, and received the Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Upon his discharge, he returned to Clarklift of New York and worked in the Service Department. In 1970 he went to work for Clarklift of Long Island as the Parts Manager.
In 1974 George entered the world of stevedoring with International Terminal Operators (I.T.O.), as a Maintenance and Equipment Superintendent for the Brooklyn piers. During this time he supervised over forty maintenance technicians and one thousand various types of equipment in six maintenance shops. In 1988 he moved to Cummins Metropower in the capacity of diesel engine sales in the Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island area. In 1992 he was promoted to Branch Manager of the Plainview facility for a short period until its closing.
In 1992 George moved to Maher Terminals Inc. the largest stevedore in Port Elizabeth, New Jersey and was in charge of all container moving equipment at their Tripoli Street Terminal. At this time, there were thirty-five maintenance technicians and five hundred pieces of equipment. In March 1994 he was promoted to Director of Maintenance for all of Maher Terminals, overseeing eighty maintenance technicians and approximately seven hundred pieces of specialized cargo handling equipment. This equipment includes over seventy-five straddle carrier container stackers making Maher Terminals the largest straddle carrier user in North America.
Currently, George lives in Seaford, New York with his wife Lorraine and has four children, Christian, Danielle, James and Anthony. He also has a granddaughter, Brianna, daughter of Christian and Jeniffer.
George Ferraro has been a Member of the Society since 1978 and served in various positions with the Society of Fleet Supervisors, including President, First Vice President, Membership Chairman and Scholarship Chairman. He is the only Member in the Society who has ever served four terms as President during 1984 - 1986 and 1998 - 2000.
George has done community work as a Scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.
