Frank Carpenter, our Member of the Month, was born in October 1941 in Jamaica, Queens, New York where he lived until the age of 10. In 1951 Frank and his family moved to Lindenhurst, Long Island where he graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1959. Shortly after graduation, Frank married Josephine and embarked on his life long career of vehicle maintenance.
In 1960, Frank went to work as a mechanic/technician in a transit mix operation where he continued to work for the next thirteen years. In 1973 Frank change fields from construction to trucking and that same year he joined the Southern Container Corporation in Deer Park, NY. In his first year working for Southern Container, Frank worked as a mechanic/technician on the floor. The following year Frank was promoted to Working Foreman and in 1975, he was yet again promoted to Fleet Supervisor for the New York and Pennsylvania operation. As the Southern Container Fleet grew, so did Frank’s responsibilities as the company added fleets in South Carolina, New Jersey and Syracuse, New York. Frank decided that it was time for a change and left Southern Container in 1987 after 12 years of employ and being responsible for approximately 450 pieces of equipment.
In 1987 Frank joined Hub Truck rental as Maintenance Supervisor. Although transitioning from private to a rental fleet was involved, Frank’s hard work and determination was rewarded when he was named Director of Maintenance of Hub Truck rental the following year.
Frank Carpenter who is held in high esteem by the Society of Fleet Supervisors also worked as a Branch Manager for Butler Fleet Services and maintained the Bell Atlantic Fleet in Suffolk County Long Island, NY from 1995 through 1998.
Frank is presently and has been the Director of Maintenance for We Transport, Inc./Towne Bus located in Plainview, New York for the past 13 years overseeing all aspects of maintenance and beyond. His fleet consists of over 1,400 pieces of equipment, a staff of 5 managers, 2 parts persons, an administrative assistant, and approximately 60 technicians serving 10 locations throughout Long Island and Queens, New York and Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Frank and his wife have managed to raise a fine family of five, Frank, Cathy, Bill, Joe and Jim. Frank and Josie also have 9 grandchildren who are the loves of their lives. The Carpenters reside in Smithtown, New York.
Frank enjoys spending time with his family, traveling the world with Josie, gardening and baking. He makes a Cheese Cake to die for!
Frank was a Member of the Society in the past and rejoined the Society in 2001. Besides being the Society’s Treasurer, now in his 8th term, Frank has also been the Society’s Journal Committee Chairman. Frank is an active Member that has always placed the Society high on his priority list making himself available to assist in any way needed, always willing to lend a helping hand and his efforts are greatly appreciated!
